Las Vegas Speeding-Related Accident Attorney

Experienced Accident Attorney Here For You!

Speed limits may be bothersome at times, particularly when you are in a rush, but speed limits are in place for a reason: they save lives. To be sure, speeding is a top cause of car crashes, and car crash-related fatalities, across the United States. In fact, speed-related accidents are so common that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that speeding was a top factor–contributing to 27 percent of total accidents–in the more than 35,000 auto accident deaths that occurred in a single year on U.S. roadways.

Driving at a speed that is above the posted speed limit, or that is an unsafe speed for conditions, can and does take lives. If you are hit by a speeding driver in Las Vegas or surrounding areas, our compassionate and knowledgeable car accident attorney can assist you in seeking the compensation for your injuries that you deserve. Our phones lines are open 24/7 – call us today to schedule your free consultation and learn more.

Speeding: Taking Lives and Burdening Society

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explains that speeding is one of the most preventable causes of accidents that takes one of the biggest tolls on society. To be sure, not only does speeding lead to crashes that cause injuries and death, but the annual economic cost related to speed-related incidents totals more than $40 billion.

The NHTSA further reports that those who are most likely to speed are young males, although young drivers in general are more guilty of speeding than are older drivers on the road. In addition to age, another risk factor for speeding is the use of alcohol; drinking alcohol, and having a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of .08 percent or greater, tends to lead to acts of speeding.

Why Speeding Is So Dangerous

Speeding is dangerous for two primary reasons: First, when a vehicle is traveling at a high speed, particularly when other factors are involved (i.e. a sharp turn, a curve, bad weather, etc.), a vehicle is more difficult to control, and therefore the risk of an accident increases. In addition to the likelihood of an accident increasing when high speeds or speeds that are too fast for conditions are present, the likelihood of serious injury also increases. That’s because the faster a vehicle is traveling at the time of crash, the more force is applied. For example, consider these statistics highlighted by the Institute for Road Safety Research:

  • When a vehicle is traveling at roughly 12.42 miles per hour and strikes a pedestrian, the chance of survival is nearly 100 percent;
  • When a vehicle is traveling at about 25 miles per hour, the chance of survival is nearly 90 percent;
  • When a vehicle is traveling at a speed of nearly 50 miles per hour, the chance of survival drops to less than 50 percent; and
  • When a vehicle is traveling at a speed of about 62 miles per hour, only about 10 percent of pedestrians survive.

These statistics highlight that the faster your vehicle or the vehicle of the other driver is traveling at the time of impact, the greater the amount of force involved, and therefore the more severe the damage. Driving the speed limit can prevent tragic injuries.

Speeding Is Both Illegal and Negligent

Speeding on roadways in Las Vegas is not only illegal when it is in direct violation of a post speed limit sign, but it is also negligent. Negligence, or the failure to act with a reasonable degree of care, is a leading cause of all car and vehicle-related accidents (bicycle crashes, pedestrian crashes, motorcycle crashes, etc.) in the state. When an accident would not have occurred but for the negligent actions of another driver, an injured party has the right to file a claim for damages and hold the at-fault party liable for the harm they have incurred.
