March Madness gets underway today in Las Vegas with the Mountain West Conference men’s basketball tournament at the Thomas and Mack Center. Then the NCAA tournament starts next week across the country and runs for the next few weeks.

But for police in the valley, March Madness takes on another meaning. For the next three weeks (starting yesterday), there will be an increased law enforcement presence at numerous intersections which are known for a high prevalence of traffic violations and auto accidents. The initiative is paid for in part by a Joining Forces Grant issued by the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.

No, it’s not a push to boost March ticket revenue. The idea is to raise awareness of traffic safety and reduce crashes in the enforcement zones. Police will be on the lookout for motorists breaking the law in ways such as:

  • speeding
  • running red lights
  • talking or texting on a cell phone while driving
  • doing all of the above simultaneously while also driving with two flat tires and watching basketball on an in-cabin TV

Henderson, North Las Vegas, and Mesquite are some of the municipalities that will join Las Vegas in ramping up enforcement in certain spots. One of the Vegas intersections where cops will be stationed is Charleston and Lamb Boulevards. The assumed reason is because that spot is home to quite a few wrecks and violators – not because the valley’s best doughnut shop is a few hundred feet west of the intersection.

So keep your eyes open for police, and watch your driving!
