There were quite a few people in the valley who ventured out of their homes last weekend to go shopping on Black Friday. And on Thanksgiving Day itself. And on the weekend after the holiday. That created numerous traffic tie-ups in and around shopping centers and malls.

Unfortunately, Las Vegas residents won’t be getting any respite this weekend. That’s because the Las Vegas Marathon takes place on Sunday, and authorities will be closing parts of the Strip and other streets in the area during the race. Road closures should begin around 2pm Sunday.

The marathon itself gets underway at 3pm on the Strip at Dewey Road, which is across from Mandalay Bay. Not only will pedestrians be prohibited from crossing the Strip during the race, but motorists traveling in both directions of I-15 will be prohibited from exiting onto eastbound Russell Road, Tropicana Avenue, Flamingo Road, Sahara Avenue, and Charleston Boulevard.

In addition, the marathon course will wind its way north of the Strip, through downtown, and along several other streets. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Carey Avenue, Fourth Street, and Casino Center Boulevard are among the noteworthy streets which will be closed while the competitors are running. A few of the roads will remain closed until 11pm Sunday night.

If you are driving near the areas where roads will be closed, not only should you expect delays, but you should also be aware of pedestrians who are walking to and from the race.
