It’s a parent’s worst nightmare.

You can educate your children about traffic safety. You can walk between them and the roadway and strap them into child safety seats whenever you take them driving. You can talk to them until you’re blue in the face about looking both ways before crossing the street and staying on sidewalks and out of roadways. And despite all that, they can sometimes still get hit by a car.

This weekend, a three-year old girl was severely injured while sitting at a bus stop in northern Las Vegas. On Saturday afternoon about 12:45pm, the toddler, her mother, and a man were sitting on a bench at a bus stop in front of a shopping center at the intersection of East Owens Avenue and North Civic Center Drive. A 22-year old man driving a sport utility vehicle crashed into the bench and injured all three people. The child suffered a broken pelvis and two fractured legs, while her mother also broke her leg and the man broke his arm. All three were rushed to University Medical Center with the child in critical condition.

The driver was eventually detained by witnesses in a parking lot about a mile away from the accident scene. Metro Police arrested him and charged him with driving under the influence of drugs, as well as driving without a license and leaving the scene of an accident. Authorities are still investigating exactly how the auto-pedestrian accident occurred. But it appears that the driver could likely be named as a defendant in personal injury lawsuits filed by both the injured man and the woman (on her own behalf and that of her young daughter) should they choose to do so.
